Jamaica this week hosted American
Airlines’ first flight from Miami International Airport to Ian Fleming
International Airport in Boscobel, marking the launch of the carrier’s nonstop
service into the Ocho Rios area.
American is now the only U.S.
carrier offering service to the Ocho Rios-adjacent airport. The new flights
provide travelers with “more convenient access to the northern and eastern
parts of [Jamaica],” according to Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) officials.
“We are extremely pleased to
see American Airlines, our largest airline partner, continue to expand their
service to Jamaica by now flying into all three of our international airports,”
said Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s minister of tourism.
“The new flights are well-timed
to support our stopover arrivals growth during this peak winter season,” he
said, “which we are projecting to be the best we’ve ever recorded.”
American’s flights between Miami
International Airport and Ian Fleming Airport will operate on Wednesdays and
Saturdays utilizing 76-seat Embraer 175 aircraft.
American now offers more than
100 weekly flights to Jamaica, including flights between Miami and the Kingston
and Montego Bay airports.
“Welcoming this new service
from the U.S. into Ocho Rios is a historic moment for Jamaica,” said Donovan
White, JTB’s director of tourism. “We are very grateful to
American Airlines,” said White, “and anticipate that the new flights will help
attract even more visitors to experience our destination’s unique tourism
product.”
